It went more smoothly than I dared to hope. The Massachusetts House debated for 45 minutes, then voted, 118 to 35, to repeal the law that prevents out-of-state same-sex couples from marrying in Massachusetts. The repeal will be official when Governor Deval Patrick signs it, which he has promised to do. Massachusetts, the first state to adopt equal marriage, now looks ready to welcome those of us who want to be married, even if neither our home states nor our federal government will recognize those marriages.
I haven’t been to Boston in over twenty years, and John has never been, but it’s starting to look like we might be making plans. On Saturday, a friend was trying to convince us to go to California to get married. I just kept saying I was hoping for Massachusetts.
So thank you, Massachusetts, and thank you to all the fine legislators who refused to give in to the churches, the bigots, and the haters. We hope to be seeing you soon. And Sean Cardinal O’Malley needn’t worry; we won’t be seeking his services.
