One of the great lesbian activists of all time, Del Martin, died today in San Francisco, aged 87. Del is shown on the right above, and on the left below, with the love of her life, Phyllis Lyon. They had been together since 1953, and had first married in San Francisco in 2004, a marriage that was later voided. They were married again this year when marriage equality became a reality in California, and had been married about fifteen weeks before Del died. Phyllis was by her side at UCSF hospice today, and was quoted as saying:
“Ever since I met Del 55 years ago, I could never imagine a day would come when she wouldn’t be by my side. I am so lucky to have known her, loved her and been her partner in all things. I also never imagined there would be a day that we would actually be able to get married. I am devastated, but I take some solace in knowing we were able to enjoy the ultimate rite of love and commitment before she passed.”
